Old Mutual - Do great things - Mathematics Training Project

Mathematics Training Project

This initiative was prompted by the need to improve the pass rates in mathematics at grade 12 level and thus to provide opportunities for a broader base of learners to pursue careers which require mathematics and quantitative content at tertiary education level. Four workshops were conducted from the Otjiwarongo Teachers Resource Centre. During all workshops the teachers followed the triple H approach-head (knowledge), hand (skills) and heart (motivation). As part of the teaching and skills training, the emphasis fell on context and fun in class practice.

The Mathematics Training Initiative program consists of four pillars that enable its success, namely:

  • Mathematics content training on all topics in the Grade 12 syllabus
  • Mathematics didactic training relevant to real life and also "fun to use" concepts
  • Motivational sessions bringing teachers in touch with realities, empowering them to take control and to accept accountability for learner performance
